Before Robert Rodriguz’s El Mariachi, Mexicans in North American action films were typically maids, drug dealers, or prison inmates. Even if the Cisco Kid was a friend of yours, you handled a dust cloth or a Mac-10 if you lasted in Hollywood longer than a New York minuto. But when El Mariachi crossed the border in 1992, things changed. Granted, it still involved a drug lord in a shoot-em-up, bang-bang, but this time the good guy was a Mexican. Austin-based Rodriguz made El Mariachi for a fistful of pesos and a little help from his friends. He wrote, directed, coproduced, edited, and operated the camera. Plus, he assembled a cast that had never acted before to work por nada. All for a paltry $7,000, a milagro without a beanfield war.

Desperado continus the outrageous action adventure. Working with a much bigger budget, Rodriguz returns the nameless mariachi to nonstop action. Again thrust into a world he never made, the hero takes his guitar-case arsenal deep into the criminal labyrinth of Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida), el gran chingon of the Mexican drug lords. With an amigo (Steve Buscemi) and a beautiful bookstore owner (Salma Hayek), el mariachi confronts an outrageous cast along the way, including a bartender (Cheech Marin), a drug deal pick-up guy (Quntin Tarantino), and the original mariachi (coproducer Carlos Gallardo) as a new-found compa’. Antonio Banderas has the lead this time, and if he’s not quite up to the challenge, it’s probably because he’s Spanish, not Mexican, a distinction not lost by anyone raised on what the popular media now calls “ethnic food.” That said, Desperado is not to be missed. Using intelligence, romance, and humor–as well as plenty of explosive, surreal violence–Rodriguz again showcases the timeless struggle between the forces of darkness and light. And, in the process, he’s recasting the mold for the contemporary action hero–kids now argu about who gets to play the Mexican. –Stephan Magcosta

The centerpiece of the third disc of this popular series is the two-part adventure “Jupiter Jazz,” which offers hints about the shrouded past of hero Spike Spiegel. Spike returns to his old haunts on Callisto in search of a mysterious woman, and comes into conflict with his former underworld associates: the icy Vicious, apprentice mobster Lin, and transgendered barroom musician Gren. Director Shinichiro Watanabe’s approach to storytelling is often fragmented and nonlinear, but the results form a strikingly moody collage of falling snow, gritty, blu-tinted cityscapes, and melancholy saxophone riffs. Few big-budget Hollywood features have presented a sense of urban alienation as effectively.

The mini-mystery, “Toys in the Attic,” comes to an unsatisfying conclusion that the elaborate computer-generated tracking shots can’t disguise–and suggests that adding the spunky Ed to the cast was not a great idea. In “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the crew of the Bebop find themselves pitted against an aged programming genius who designed a high-tech transportation system–and hid a flaw in the software. But he also concealed clus in chess pieces, setting up a formal and formidable battle of wits.

Note: Viewers of Chinese ancestry and other viewers may find the depiction of the gang lords in “Jupiter Jazz” offensive. Unrated: Suitable for ages 13 and older for nudity, violence, and adult situations. –Charles Solomon

Kenny (Harland Williams) is sent to jail, and to rescu him from the almost inevitable trauma of homosexual rape (giving you some idea of this movie’s level of humor), his buddies set out to raise his $100,000 bail by selling high-grade weed ripped off from a pharmaceutical research lab. That’s about it for the plot; the rest of the movie’s a parade of marijuana jokes and amusing pot-friendly cameos by the likes of Snoop Dog, Willie Nelson, and Janeane Garofalo. As two of the bong-hitting buddies, Jim Breur (from Saturday Night Live) and comedian Dave Chappelle do their best to disguise the movie’s lack of inspiration. But no matter how hard they try to milk laughs from the one-joke premise, they can’t stop the movie’s title from being an apt description of the movie itself. –Jeff Shannon

This ambitious mixture of dramatic reconstruction with traditional documentary affords excellent insight into legendary blusman Robert Johnson’s life, the enduring power of his music, and the myth which surrounds him. Can’t You Hear The Wind Howl transcends its genre of “docudrama,” providing the well-researched information we’d expect from a conventional documentary with the dramatic impact we could hope for from a Hollywood film.

Contemporary blusman Keb’ Mo’ (Kevin Moore) plays Johnson, and Danny Glover narrates, but the real star is Robert Johnson’s music. The film’s strength is its power of suggestion; we never see the Johnson character up close, never hear him talk. As if in a dream, he flits in and out of scenes, whether courting his girlfriend or stirring a juke joint to mayhem. But you’d be hard put picking him out of a police lineup. We never see him such that we can know him, which is an accurate representation of the elusive musician, according to the interview footage with Johnson’s proteges and peers–among them Johnny Shines, Robert Lockwood Jr., and Honeyboy Edwards. Keb’ Mo’, who has included Robert Johnson songs on each of his three CDs, says that portraying Johnson had a lasting effect. “It’s an internal thing,” says Mo’. “In playing him, you pull in some of the spirit. The spirit of a juke joint, the spirit of the south at that time.” This film falls nicely between an homage and an explanation. –Sam Sutherland
